ITV Research

Today we found out that our programme can be designed to be broadcast on any variation of ITV/Channel 5, e.g. ITV2/3/4 and Channel 5*. I decided to do some research on the different types of programmes on the different channels to help decide what I'd like to focus on, as there's now a broader range of ideas to use.

Ben Frow, Director of Programmes on Channel 5, states that “We particularly like factual shows - Specialist Factual, Documentaries and Factual Entertainment. We are not really in the market for Comedy or Drama at the moment” and seeing as I've already decided I'd like to do a fictional piece, this removes Channel 5 from my options.

Now I need to decide which variation of ITV I would like my programme to belong to, so I did some research into the different channels and what's on them:

ITV is the home of high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news; both national and regional, e.g; Midsomer Murders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Loose Women, The Chase
ITV2 - ITV's entertainment channel for young people, with a range of shows included original scripted comedies and panel shows, American acquisitions and movies.
E.g; Love Island, Britain's Got Talent, Take Me Out
ITVBe - Dedicated to lifestyle and entertainment programming from the UK and US, featuring real lives and real people - "Life Worth Sharing"
E.g; The Real Housewives of Melbourne, Ibiza Weekender, The Only Way is Essex, Yummy Mummies, Dating in the Dark
ITV3 - Home for popular classic drama series from ITV, alongside a selection of choice factual and entertainment programmes - "Contemporary and Classic Drama"
E.g; Unforgotten, The Guilty, Endeavour, Undeniable
ITV4 - Great escapism with a mixture of live sport, iconic movies, US acquired shows and cult classic - "Sport and Cult Classics"
E.g; UEFA European Under 17 Championship Finals, Road Racing Series, French Open Tennis, The Sweeney, The Professionals
CITV - Home for ITV's younger viewers, a mix of animated and live action series for school ages children, including home grown commissions and presentation items created by kids themselves - For kids, by kids
E.g; Spy School, The Haunted Hathaways, Make It Pop

This research has helped me decide on ITV or ITV3 for my programme to be broadcast on, as I'd like to create a sequence from a crime drama.
