ITV look for clear ideas which can deliver the highest quality popular mainstream drama to the largest audience. Subject topics vary, but they always look for mainstream appeal and an accessible way in for their audience. It could be the kind of story or a type of character. An ITV drama is never cynical and is always entertaining. They don’t do black comedy or satire, and they can’t be bleak.
ITV is the home of mainstream drama, making series/serials/single films for broad, mainstream audiences. This fits the brief of 18-35 millennials for my programme. Their output aims to have variety and depth. It includes period series Downton Abbey and crime series such as Broadchurch and Unforgotten. Notable dramas include Downton Abbey, Victoria, Broadchurch, Marcella, Dark Angel, Doc Martin and Lewis, Prey, Unforgotten, Scott & Bailey, endeavour, Grantchester and Vera.
However, I would like to focus on a crime drama so I will watch some of the crime dramas on the moodboard; not Downton Abbey/Victoria.
I also looked on a website called BARB which gives viewing data, and I researched the weekly top 10 programmes on ITV 3 from 4th-10th June. These are the results:
